If you have wondered which character strengths show up in your everyday choices, or want a result you can keep and revisit, this workbook gives you room to answer on paper. It covers all 24 strengths in the VIA classification, grouped across six virtues, and is written for adults. The scales invite reflection on your typical attitudes and behavior; their descriptive bands are not norms or comparisons with other people.
The 52-page pack includes a two-page Start Here, 27-page Measures file with the scales, scoring directions, bands table, and profile chart, plus 10 Worksheets and three Trackers. A two-page Quick Reference lists the strengths and includes a cut-out signature-strengths card. The three-page Guide explains how to read the bands and their limits; a three-page Clinician Guide and one-page Credits and References complete the set. All nine PDFs are provided in both A4 and US Letter, with matching page counts.
Use the six-week path if it suits you: complete a few virtue groups at a time, fill the six cluster reflection worksheets, then make a plan and log where you use strengths. The Start Here page also offers a smaller first step, so you can begin with one scale. Later, repeat the scales, shade a second profile, and use the retake tracker to note changes in your own answers. You finish with dated pages and reflections to return to or bring to a conversation with a professional.
What you get
- Answer the 24 paper scales and follow their printed scoring directions before copying results to the bands table.
- Shade the profile chart to see your 24 scores together, arranged across the six virtue groups.
- Use six cluster worksheets to reflect on what each virtue group brings to your own life.
- Record strength use and weekly observations in the repeatable trackers, then compare a later retake.
- Keep the Quick Reference card nearby to recall all 24 strengths and write down five signature strengths.
What it is not
For educational self-reflection, not diagnosis or treatment, and not a substitute for professional care. The VIA classification was created by Christopher Peterson and Martin E. P. Seligman; these IPIP-based short scales are inspired by that classification, not the official VIA Inventory of Strengths. Personal use; professionals may print client-facing pages for their own clients; group use and redistribution need a separate license.
Questions people ask
Is the VIA instrument free, and what am I paying for here?
This pack reproduces short scales based on the IPIP representation of the VIA classification. The purchase is for the printable workbook pages, including scoring directions, a profile chart, reflection worksheets, trackers, and guides. The pack does not claim to be the official VIA Inventory of Strengths.
How are the VIA character strengths scores read?
Each scale sheet gives a scoring rule, and the Guide explains the three descriptive bands. They divide each scale range; they are not norms, clinical cutoffs, or a comparison with other people. Use the profile to compare your own answers across strengths and, if you retake, over time.
Can I print this workbook on A4 or US Letter paper?
Yes. The complete set is provided as PDFs in both A4 and US Letter, with identical page counts for each size. The product includes nine files and 52 pages per paper size; you can print the repeat-marked scales, chart, and tracker pages again when needed.
