Who it is for

  • Adults reflecting on how they respond to others
  • People who want a guided paper-based self-reflection
  • Counselors and coaches using structured session pages
  • Adults tracking their own IRI scores over time

When someone else is upset, do you find it easy to see their point of view, or do you feel pulled into their distress? The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) offers four separate lenses for reflecting on those responses: Perspective Taking, Fantasy, Empathic Concern, and Personal Distress. This workbook gives adults a calm, structured way to answer the 28 statements, score each lens, and consider what their answers describe without treating a score as a label.

The 29-page pack includes a five-page measure section with the response scale, reverse-scoring steps, a worked example, and a four-score profile chart. Ten worksheets offer specific reflection and practice prompts, while four tracker pages organize a six-week path, weekly reviews, and score history. A two-page Quick Reference explains the lenses and includes cut-out reminder cards; the two-page Reading Guide covers interpretation limits, and a two-page Professional Guide supports use in sessions. The one-page Credits and References file credits Mark H. Davis. Each file is a PDF, supplied in both A4 and US Letter.

You can begin with a few questionnaire items, then return when you have time, or follow the suggested six-week sequence from baseline to re-test. Repeatable worksheets and trackers can be printed again as needed. By the end, you will have your four scores kept separate, notes on situations and practices you explored, and a record you can revisit or bring to a conversation with a qualified professional.

What you get

  • Answer all 28 IRI statements and use the Measures pages to score each of the four tendencies separately.
  • Draw your four scores on the profile chart, with each subscale shown on its own 0-to-28 range.
  • Use ten Worksheets for perspective taking, fictional-character reflection, care in action, and noticing personal distress.
  • Follow the six-week path and record practice, weekly reviews, and later scores in the repeatable Trackers.
  • Keep the Quick Reference cards nearby and consult the Reading Guide about what your profile can and cannot say.

What it is not

For educational self-reflection only, not diagnosis or treatment. The Interpersonal Reactivity Index was developed by Mark H. Davis, and all rights to the instrument belong to its author; buyer use is personal, with professionals permitted to print and reuse pages with their own clients.

Questions people ask

How is the Interpersonal Reactivity Index scored?

The workbook guides you through scoring seven items for each of four subscales, including nine reverse-scored items. Each subscale ranges from 0 to 28. The guide says to keep the four scores separate; it provides no validated cutoffs and does not combine them into one empathy score.

Can I print the IRI workbook on A4 or US Letter paper?

Yes. The printable PDF files are supplied in both A4 and US Letter sizes, and the pack contains 29 pages in each size. The repeatable worksheets and tracker pages can be printed again when you want extra copies for writing or later check-ins.

How often should I repeat the IRI?

The Reading Guide suggests waiting a few weeks between tests and keeping the setting similar, including time of day and privacy. Record each check-in on Tracker 4 and consider score differences alongside the situations and practices you noted.
