When closeness feels easy with one person and uncertain with another, a single attachment label may not answer your question. The ECR-RS asks the same nine statements about your mother, father, romantic partner, and best friend, so you can reflect on each bond separately. You calculate anxiety and avoidance scores for each relationship and place four dots on a map. The scores offer a snapshot of your current perceptions, not an explanation of why a relationship feels a certain way.
The 33-page workbook is supplied as PDF files in both A4 and US Letter. Start Here lays out a six-week path and safety note; Measures contains the four questionnaires, scoring instructions, a worked example, and the quadrant map. Nine worksheets include relationship reflections, an opening-up ladder, and a conversation planner. Four trackers provide a score-history chart and repeatable weekly and monthly logs. The Quick Reference has scoring steps and cut-out cards, while the Guide explains the dimensions, relationship differences, and limits. A professional guide and credits complete the pack.
You can answer all four relationship sets in one sitting, or pause and return when you feel ready. Use the map to notice differences without treating a quadrant name as a fixed identity or clinical category. Over the following weeks, choose one relationship and one small reflection or planned step, then record what you notice in the logs. If you choose to repeat the questionnaire, add the new scores to the history chart. You will have your own written record of scores, reflections, and next steps to revisit.
What you get
- Answer nine ECR-RS statements for each of four relationships, keeping each person’s responses separate.
- Follow the Measures scoring steps, worked example, and midpoint rule to calculate two averages per relationship.
- Plot four relationship scores on the quadrant map and compare patterns without treating labels as diagnoses.
- Use the opening-up ladder and conversation planner to write one manageable reflection or action at a time.
- Track scores and observations with the score-history chart, weekly log, and monthly review.
What it is not
This workbook supports educational self-reflection; it is not a diagnosis or treatment, and it is not a substitute for professional care. The ECR-RS was developed by R. Chris Fraley, Marie E. Heffernan, Amanda M. Vicary, and C. Chloe Brumbaugh; the items’ source page states no licence or fee, so check its terms before clinical or commercial use.
Questions people ask
Is the ECR-RS free, and what am I paying for?
The pack says the ECR-RS items are published on the first author’s lab website, whose page does not state a licence or fee. This purchase is for the printable workbook pages, scoring support, worksheets, trackers, guides, and files in A4 and US Letter. Check the source terms before clinical or commercial use of the items.
How do I score and read the ECR-RS?
For each relationship, reverse items 1 through 4 by subtracting the rating from 8. Average items 1 through 6 for avoidance and items 7 through 9 for anxiety. The workbook reads scores at or above 4.0 as high. Its quadrants describe two scores; they are not clinical categories or official cut-offs.
Can I print this workbook on A4 or US Letter paper?
Yes. The workbook files are provided as PDFs in both A4 and US Letter, and the pack reports matching page counts in both sizes: 33 pages total across nine files. The pages are designed for paper and pen; pages marked “Make copies” can be printed again for repeat use.
